This report discusses the effects that microphytic or cryptogamic crusts (mosses, lichens, liverworts, algae, fungi, and bacteria) have on nitrogen-fixation and soil stabilization in a semi-arid ecosystem. Speculation on the historical role of cryptogams and their relation to grasses (in a grazed or fire suppressed regime) at Bandelier National Monument, NM, is included.
