The Mineral King Risk Reduction Project (MKRRP) was initiated out of a need to assess the operational requirements and cost effectiveness of large scale prescribed burning for wildland management in a setting altered by a century of fire suppression. This report summarizes the monitoring and research work that has been accomplished, to date, on this project. Fifteen long-term fire effects plots involving several vegetation types were installed and monitored. A total of 60 giant sequoia trees in the Atwell Grove area of Mineral King were examined. This project is aimed at determining if there is a relationship between heavy fuel accumulations and the formation of fire scars. Natural resource inventory plots were also installed and revisited before and after the segment 3 burn was conducted. Two permanent small mammal live-trapping plots were established and sampled during 1995. Stream chemistry samples have been taken weekly since May of 1995 and will give information on stream chemistry pre and post burn. Fire history samples were also taken in segment 3 of the burn unit and extensive fuel loading studies were conducted as well. The projects objectives are listed and several maps break the watershed sized prescribed burn down to segments, each of which will be burned according to the overall project plan.
