Stable marshes and deteriorating marshes were compared in terms of seasonal sedimentation. The marshes surrounding Barataria Bay (deteriorating) and the marshes surrounding Fourleague Bay (stable) were examined. Deteriorating marshes receive most sedimentation during storms, while stable marshes receive substantial amounts during flood season. Deteriorating marshes are accreting at a faster rate, but are not maintianing their intertidal elevation as well as stable marshes. It is apparent that the Mississippi River is no longer a direct source of sediments for Barataria Bay. Marsh transformation to open bay can not be stopped unless riverine sediment is reintroduced.
