This is a study to determine moisture relations within a representative area of Californian coastal chaparral. The structure and ecology of this plant community is described in detail. The environmental complex of the association is analyzed with particular reference to soil moisture and the evaporating power of the air as they are related to growth and other features of the vegetation. Consideration is also given to precipitation, atmospheric moisture, and temperature, especially soil temperature. An attempt is made to evaluate the several factors and to correlate them with the activities of the vegetation.
