Compares molecular genetic variation of two silversword subspecies, A. sandwicense spp. macrocephalum (Haleakala) and A. sandwicense spp. sandwicense (Mauna Kea). Despite the severe population size reduction of A. sandwicense spp. sandwicense, this population does not display substantially reduced genetic variation relative to the A. sandwicense spp. macrocephalum population. This suggests that the former may not have gone through multiple generations at a reduced population size, and that the Haleakala population has not declined in historic times.
