One-third of the nursery habitat for anadromous salmonids in Redwood Creek is within Redwood National Park. The habitat has been damaged by logging along the stream, and this report examines potential effects of rehabilitation efforts. Sampling of aquatic organisms and habitat shows that the chief limitations on use for nursery habitat are stream gradient and flow, and such barriers as log jams. Water temperature and amount of sediment on the stream floor are also important. Production of salmon and steelhead from the stream was declining as of the latest estimated count in 1960. Continued monitoring of effectiveness of upper-slope treatment is suggested; removal of barriers would not significantly increase spawning and nursery habitat, and is not recommended. Map shows sample sections and barriers to fish migration at that time.
