A simulation model of the wolf-moose-plant community of Isle Royale was developed in order to assay the use of realistic simulation models in the management of large mammal populations. This model differs from previous published models of this system by incorporating the detailed behavioral and physiological mechanisms believed to operate in the regulation of the wolf and moose populations. The interaction between the moose population and forest communities was modeled as a true interaction incorporating energy and materials flow from the producers to the moose and the effect of this flow on forest succession. This model allows identification of the crucial knowledge required in order to model and manage a carnivore herbivore-plant community.
