Morphological variation in Southern Appalachian Betula alleghaniensis and B lenta (Betulaceae)

Variations in leaf, fruit, bract, and catkin morphology of Betula alleghaniensis (yellow birch) and B. lenta (sweet birch) was studied along the elevational gradient in the southern Appalachians in order to characterize the regional structure of the two species. Populations at 52 sites were sampled in North Carolina and adjacent parts of the Tennessee, Georgia, and South Carolina. Numerous sites were studied along the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina. Discussions on data collection techniques and results are included in the article.
