Selected physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of the five major stream systems (East Branch Primose, West Branch Primose, Indian Grave, Jersey Brook, and the Passaic below Leddell Pond) in Morristown National Historical Park, NJ, were monitored on a seasonal basis for one year (July 1986-July 1987) and indicated that the streamwater was of high quality. Fecal coliform and fecal streptococci counts did not indicate contamination by human excrement. The assemblages and numbers of stream dwelling invertebrates (mostly insects) were typical of the area. The algae (mostly diatoms) found were typical of high quality stream water. A continuing, in-house monitoring program, and a periodic, more extensive chemical and biological survey by an outside agency is recommended. The few soil samples analyzed had high aluminum concentrations, which could be a problem for the forest trees and aquatic life.
