The part of southwest Florida covered by this paper includes most of Big Cypress National Preserve. The authors report causes of mortality for endangered Florida panthers. Results are not clear: the discussion section says that of the 32 deaths documented between 1979 and 1991, 'The most common cause of death was highway collision (N=15, 46.9%)' but the concluding paragraph states, 'In summary, natural mortality accounted for a much larger percentage of the total than road mortality.'
