The characteristics and effects of both motor and oar boat trips along the Colorado River through Grand Canyon are discussed, with tables showing visitor responses to questionnaires. Passengers who had experienced both motor and oar trips tended to prefer oar trips as quieter and more relaxing, causing less impact on the canyon and other visitors, and providing a desirable degree of social interaction. Implications of the study for the management of river trips are suggested. Bibliography, 11 tables, 2 appendices
