The Bristol Bay sockeye salmon is the most important renewable resource of Southwestern Alaska. This area is essentially devoid of a varied economic base and the fishery has been and remains the chief source of income to local communities. The economic depression following a year of poor fishing emphasizes the extreme dependence on the sockeye salmon resource. Continuing abundance of the sockeye salmon is essential to the immediate and long term economy of the region. The significance of the fishery as a food resource in ever increasing demand must also be recognized.
