(Adapted from author's abstract.) This 1984 master's thesis analyzes the success of Denali National Park's education program about bears. The author found that most visitors improve their knowledge concerning proper behavior in bear country during their stay at the Park. Written information provided in the Alpenglow proved to be the most effective method of providing information. Visitors, in general, behaved better if they had more knowledge. U.S. National Park Service employees, however, showed no significant correlation between knowledge and behavior; it should be noted that their behavior spanned a much longer time period than that of the ordinary visitor. The author feels NPS could improve their bear management program and offers recommendations on how to do so.
