The purpose of this study was to observe the effects of surface roughness, porosity, thermal conduction and size distribution characteristics to the total signal on the microwave and infrared portions of the spectra. The Cinder Cone area of Lassen Volcanic National Park was selected as a test site because it provides an excellent target for microwave and infrared by eliminating many of the parameters that contribute to the total signal. The test site provided valuable answers to problems involving the complex study of geologic maps by remote sensing techniques. Included are location maps, chemical analysis, density moisture measurements, diurnal heating graph, and surface roughness measurements.
