This study investigates abnormal variation in tree growth in conifers, mainly decreased growth after the mid-20th century. Chronologies from Rincon Mountains trees are included in the study. The growth decreases that were observed may be a result of drought effects, but evidence does not yet rule out air pollution as a contributing cause. More trees in the southern study areas showed decreased growth than those farther north, and pollution has been greater in the south. Competition was eliminated as a likely cause.
