The most prevalent ions in lake water are SO4 2- and Ca 2+ . Hydrologic data, throughfall and soil solution ion concentration, and ion flux indicate minimal terrestrial inputs to the lake except during late spring snowmelt. Lake benthic cores showed a sharp increase in s and heavy metal concentrations during the last century which reflect anthropic atmospheric inputs. However, diatom stratigraphy suggests that the lake has been rather uniform in pH for many centuries. We hypothesize that this lake has acidified through natural processes. The lake's low DOC concentration appears due to flocculation of conterminous bog inputs, and extensive benthic mosses likely help maintain the lake's oligotrophic condition.
