Methods are being developed for the monitoring of surface and ground water quality, macroalgal production, and eelgrass vigor in selected habitats of the Nauset Marsh system, Cape Cod National Seashore. Temperature, salinity, and dissolved oxygen profiles and hypolimnetic anoxia were measured during the summer in Salt Pond, where DIN:DIP concentrations indicated nitrogen-limitation of primary production. Macroalgal biomass was found to be highly clumped in distribution across intertidal flats; sampling error was greatly reduced by enlarging quadrats to 10 ft2. Groundwater nutrient concentrations varied directly with the density of upgradient shoreline residential development. Eelgrass wasting disease was present in the sites examined and shows the characteristics of a very actively diseased population. Studies of stratification, anoxia, and episodic mixing of Salt Pond showed that both atmospheric cooling and the intrusion of cold oceanic water caused the stratification observed during the summer.
