Nauset Marsh is a back-barrier estuary composed mainly of Spartina alterniflora marsh. This system also includes tidal kettle ponds, shallow tidal channels, intertidal mud flats, intertidal sand flats, and eelgrass (Zostera marina) beds. There are a number of human-induced factors that potentially threaten this ecosystem including nutrient loading and oil spills. A long-term monitoring program partially based on suggestions in Roman and Able (1989) was initiated to detect changes in cultural eutrophication and provide information on wildlife and habitat in this vulnerable marine ecosystem. Monitoring parameters include physical characteristics (tide, temperature, salinity, and conductivity), water quality (dissolved oxygen profiles, groundwater nitrate), vegetation (Cladophora biomass and eelgrass wasting disease), nesting and migrating shorebirds, and habitat mapping. Results of the first year of the monitoring program are given.
