The article examines the nearshore sediment movement along 400km of coast along the northeastern Gulf of Mexico. The study area includes the coastline from Dog Island, FL to Morgan Point, AL. Results indicate highly variable sediment deposits ranging from: (1) late Holocene beach-ridge plains; (2) a number of late Holocene overwashed barrier islands; and (3) a late Pleistocene barrier complex. The document also presents a sediment transport model for the entire stretch of Gulf coast based on a number of data sources including fair-weather and wave-energy transformation models. The findings have implications for the late Holocene development of this coast and the morphodynamics of other coasts which have similar physiographic characteristics.
