This report provides a summary of current information about the biology, ecology, and the causes of the decline of freshwater mussels within the United States. Background information is given on natural and historic uses of mussels. The anatomy, physiology, and reproduction of mussels is detailed. Causes of habitat loss and degradation are listed. Threats are discussed, including invasion by alien species (the Asian clam and Zebra mussels). Recovery tools and recommendations are presented. The appendixes present management options to protect mussels and their habitats, a resource bibliography, references to education and outreach materials, and freshwater mussel contacts. Table 1 presents a list of federally listed freshwater mussels: including 12 which are definitely and 4 which are potentially located National Park Service (NPS) units. Those located in NPS units include: Cumberland elktoe (Alasmidonta atropurpurea), dwarf wedge mussel (Alasmidonta atropurpurea), yellow blossom pearly mussel (Epioblasma florentina florentina), northern riffleshell (Epioblasma torulosa rangiana), cracking pearly mussel (Hemistena lata), pink mucket pearly mussel (Lampsilis abrupta), Higgins' eye pearly mussel (Lampsilis higginsi), rink pink mussel (Obovaria retusa), little wing pearly mussel (Pegias fabula), clubshell (Pleurobema clava), rough pigtoe (Pleurobema plenum), rough rabbitsfoot (Quadrula cyclindrica strigillata), and the winged mapleleaf mussel (Quadrula fragosa) . The potential candidates include: the upland combshell (Epioblasma metastriata), fine-lined pocketbook (Lampsilis altilis), wavey rayed (Lampsilis fascuola), and the Coosa moccasinshell (Medionidus parvulus).
