A series of studies was initiated in the summer of 1979 on watershed ecosystems located within Isle Royale National Park, (Washington Creek), the Keweenaw Peninsula, and Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, all in Michigan. Baseline data were obtained regarding the structure and function of northern ecosystems, and how they vary as a result of differences in vegetation, community composition, and precipitation inputs. Precipitation quantity and quality in the Lake Superior basin are important ecological variables. This chapter summarizes the data collected to date on the neutralization of acid precipitation in low-order streams in the upper portions of watersheds with differing substrates, the results of experimental acidification of one watershed, and examines some historical watershed data which imply that acid loading and neutralization have occurred in the Lake Superior basin for at least the last 15 years.
