The vegetation of Turtle Mound was studies in 1971-73 and again twenty years later. Recent severe freezes have led to the disappearance of several tropical species that were at or near their northern limit. These vanished specie include cereus gracilis, exothea paniculata, sideroxylon foetidissium and ocotea coriacea. However, it was found that the frequency of more temperate woody plants has increased along with several vines.
