Marion JL and Haskell DA. 1988. An analysis of visitor impacts and rehabilitation methods for backcountry campsites at Shenandoah National Park: final report. Mid-Atlantic Region (MAR) Research/Resources Management Report. Project number 4840-RMVP-N-61. National Park Service, Mid-Atlantic Regional Office. Philadelphia
A study was conducted in Shenandoah National Park, VA from 1981 to 1983 to provide quantitative information on the type and degree of impact on backcountry resources from camping and to experiment with different methods of rehabilitating severely impacted campsite areas. Backcountry campsites were evaluated for size of area, distance to trail and water, elevation, slope, degree of erosion, fire circles and scars, and vegetation type. Campsites were rehabilitated and protected to varying degrees in order to determine the most effective means of rehabilitation.
