The Northern Rocky Mountain Wolf Recovery Plan outlines steps for recovery of the gray wolf (Canis lupus) populations in portions of their former range in the Northern Rocky Mountains of the U. S. . This plan emphasizes gray wolf recovery through natural processes (dispersal southward from western Canada) where possible. Where this is not possible because of distance from "seed" populations, translocation is the only known way to establish such a population. This recovery plan is intended to provide direction and coordination for recovery efforts. Task responsibilities outlined in the implementation schedule are suggestions contingent upon appropriations, priorities, and personnel and funding constraints. The plan is a guidance document that presents conservation strategies for the Northern Rocky Mountain wolf. It is not a decision-making document.
