This is one of 11 resource reports prepared by the Alaska Dept. of Fish and Game and the Alaska Dept. of Natural Resources as part of an inventory and analysis of resources on state lands for the Northwest Area Plan. The planning area includes 10.7 million acres of uplands on Norton Sound, the Seward Peninsula, the Lisburne Peninsula north to Icy Cape, and in the upper Kobuk River valley. It also includes approximately 4 million acres of state tide and submerged lands along the coasts of these areas. The principal source of resource information contained in the report comes from the "Alaska Habitat Management Guide for the Arctic Region" published in 1986. The report provides the database used to develop and evaluate alternatives for state land management. It summarizes the information available concerning fish and wildlife resources of northwest Alaska including: issues and comments on fish and wildlife habitats; public comments; observations on fish and wildlife supply; human-use rates of fish and wildlife; review of land suitability relative to fish and wildlife and to human needs; a discussion on supply and demand factors; commentary on the effects of fish and wildlife production and use on state goals; review of the consequences of resource use on fish and wildlife; and a survey of registered guides. It is intended to provide information necessary to resolve fish and wildlife habitat issues as well as subsistence-based issues.
