The author is an exponent of the Indian theory of origin of the balds, claiming that the balds are 'expanded trails and camp sites' of the predecessors of the Cherokee. He questions Whittaker's belief that the balds are due to 'extreme exposure,' as the weather conditions cover a vast area of which the balds are a very small part.
