Desmognathus wrighti is usually described as an inhabitant of the high spruce-fir forests of the southern Appalachian Mountains. Indeed, its known range is practically coextensive with that of the Canadian Zone forests of the southern Blue Ridge Physiographic Province, which extend discontinuously from Mt. Rogers in southwestern Virginia to the Great Smoky and Great Balsam ranges of North Carolina and Tennessee. The detailed ecological studies of Hairston (1949) and Organ (1961) confirm the preference of D. wrighti for spruce-fir forests, although as they showed, it is not restricted to them.
