Notes on the lava flow of 1880-81 from Mauna Loa

Barton GH. 1884. Notes on the lava flow of 1880-81 from Mauna Loa. Science. 3(61):410-413

Barton presents a general description of the volcanoes on the island of Hawaii and a brief eyewitness description of the 1881 lava flow. He describes the formation of tree molds and lava tubes with associated stalactites and stalagmites. He includes a photograph of a cataract of 1881 lava going into a Wailuku River plunge pool. He points out that formation of tubes allows lava to apparently flow uphill over small topographic obstacles.
