Comparisons of rodent fauna were made betwen Galveston Island, TX and Mustang Island, TX. The cotton rat (Sigmodon) appears to be the only rodent native to Galveston Island. Exotic rat and mouse species have established themselves well on Galveston Island where they were presumably introduced via ship. The exotic rodent population on Mustang Island is less than that on Galveston Island due to the relative scarcity of fresh water on Mustang Island and the relative newness of Port Aransas as a seaport compared to Galveston.
