Badlands National Monument is a unique ecological area that encompasses parts of Jackson and Pennington counties in South Dakota. Previous to this article one species of bat had been recorded for BNM. In 1970, Farney spent two months in the Monument observing and collecting bats at two locations. He observed the following five species: Myotis leibii ciliolabrum, Myotis thysanodes pahasapensis, Myotis volans interior, Eptesicus fuscus pallidus, Plecotus townsendii pallescens.
