Notes on the Oppossum Pipefish, Oostethus Lineatus, from the Indian River Lagoon and Vicinity, Florida

Gilmore RG. 1977. Notes on the Oppossum Pipefish, Oostethus Lineatus, from the Indian River Lagoon and Vicinity, Florida. Copeia. 1977(4):781-783

The occurrence of oppossum pipefish ( Oostethus lineatus) north of its tropical-subtropical range had not been recorded until an ichthyological survey of the Indian River Lagoon and its freshwater tributaries was conducted from 1972-1976. Twelve freshwater specimens were seined and four lagoon specimens were seined at shallow, spermtophyte, grassflat seine stations. This study indicates that oppossum pipefish spawn in fresh water and the larvae develop in lagoonal waters.
