Aerial surveys were conducted on 20 major salmon streams in Katmai National Monument and adjacent drainages 11 August-19 October 1974. A total of 304 bears were seen, of which 17.4% were cubs, 13.4% were yearlings, 15.5% were sows with cubs or yearlings, and 53.7% were single bears. The average cub litter was 2.12 and the average yearling litter was 2.14. Nearly half of the bears were seen on the Savonoski River which, along with Brooks River and Margot Creek, was intensively sampled. Peak bear use on the Savonoski occurred in October and in mid-August through early September in Margot Creek.
