An Observational Study of the American Black Bear (Ursus americanus)

Two pairs of captive black bears were observed over a two year period for a total of 145 hours, and records were kept of postures, activities, socializing, and all other activities, including seemingly minor ones. Of special attention were activities that indicated awareness of the observer, those that involved both members of a pair, and those that might be said to be forms of communication, such as marking and rubbing.
