Daytime counts of Pteropus samoensis from stations with a commanding view of native and/or agricultural forest in American Samoa and Western Samoa were conducted in 1986. At each station a 30-minute count was made by one or more observers. Data recorded included the time of each observation, the estimated distance to each bat seen, and whether or not bats were using the observation area or flying over. A second survey method was used, the Variable Circular Plot Method, to collect data on fruit bats in American Samoa. This method consisted of marking stations 150 m apart along transects and conducting 8-minute counts at each station in the morning.
