This paper describes methods developed by the authors for determining numbers of Marbled Murrelets in California through counting birds at sea. (Murrelets nesting in inland forests are difficult to count accurately.) Surveys were conducted along coastal California from Point Lobos to the Oregon border. The total is estimated at 6500 birds. The map accompanying this paper shows distribution of Marbled Murrelets in California with a distinct clustering within Redwood National Park. The concluding section mentions vulnerability of the murrelets to oil spills and gill nets, and recommends continuing monitoring.
