The tidewater goby, Eucyclogobius newberryi, is an uncommon small native fish, and its numbers may be declining. The author found it in Rodeo Lagoon, but not in other San Francisco Bay area sites it formerly inhabited. Habitat at Rodeo Lagoon is especially favorable, and protection here for this species is important. As the tidewater goby can reproduce in less-saline water than the introduced yellowfin goby (also found in the lagoon and adjacent artificial lake), control of salinity is suggested to reduce competition for the native species. Figures include graphs of water temperature and larval occurrence of the two species, and tables list fish species collected in the lagoon and lake, along with sampling data.
