This is the second book planned by the Everglades Natural History Association. It is the first to treat the plants. It is the intention of the Association to present a series of papers on various aspects of the unique natural history of the Everglades National Park. The first was Everglades - The Park Story, by Dr. William B. Robertson. A purpose of this book is to acquaint visitors to the Everglades National Park with some of the characteristic plants, in this case those that grow on trunks and branches of trees. These are called epiphytes or air plants. They are a distinctive feature of the area and a constant source of interest and inquiry by visitors. Some ferns, orchids, peperomias, bromeliads, one cactus, and a tree have become adapted to an aerial mode of living and are discussed in this book. In addition, this unique area with its tropical vegetation and unusual plant societies, is briefly described.
