The Geographic Information Systems (GIS) program at Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument provides management assistance in many areas: natural resources, maintenance, visitor protection, and interpretation. In addition to aspects planned at the beginning of the program in 1991, Global Positioning Systems technology has increasingly become accessible and is a useful adjunct. This revision to the 1991 GIS plan suggests directions for continuing and future development of the monument's GIS program. Much of the report consists of project statements identifying specific information needs that can be met using GIS. The maps and diagrams that can be produced help clarify complex resource problems, and allow managers to illustrate monument needs and issues graphically.
