Authors' Abstract: "Pesticide analysis of young, flying Mexican free-tailed bats (Tadarida brasiliensis mexicana) from four maternity roosts revealed the presence of DDT (and its metabolites DDE and DDD), dieldrin, endrin, toxaphene and Aroclor 1260. DDE was found in substantially greater concentrations than any other chemical. Body burdens of DDE were greatest in flying young from Carlsbad Caverns, New Mexico. There was little difference in burdens among young from Eagle Creek Cave, Arizona; Bracken Cave, Texas; and Newman Bridge, California. Pesticide loads of DDE in young from Carlsbad Caverns remained fairly constant over a 4-year period and at levels potentially hazardous to these bats, primarily during their first migration."
