Origin of the Southern Appalachian Grass Balds

Wells BW. 1936. Origin of the Southern Appalachian Grass Balds. Science. 83(2151):283

The author asserts his belief that the balds are ecological artifacts of Indian origin. Old trails and campsites removed the forest cover and the land became fields of Danthonia compressa. This species is well adapted to the soil and climatic conditions, and grows so thickly that few weed or tree seeds can invade.
