The authors investigated salinity tolerance and effects of increased salinity on an endemic pupfish (Cyprinodon milleri) taken from Cottonball Marsh in Death Valley National Park. Through physiological regulation the fish are able to tolerate high external salinities, an important characteristic for surviving in saline water which may evaporate rapidly increasing concentrations. The paper suggests that the fish move to areas of lower salinity when they can, and can tolerate all but extreme situations when isolated in small pools. Includes a table comparing major ions in water from Cottonball Marsh with seawater, data graphs.
