(Adapted from author's abstract.) This 1981 Master's thesis reports on habitat use and productivity of breeding Pacific eiders on Cape Espenberg during 1976 and 1977. Eiders nested on both the mainland and an island in a pond. On the mainland, the shoreline had the greatest density of eider and gull nests, with the most successful eider nests located on peninsulas. Eiders nesting on the island had larger clutch sizes, initiated egg-laying earlier, and were more successful at nesting than eiders on the mainland. The island colony contained 322 nests. The thesis also addresses the effect of relationships between nesting eiders and glaucous gulls on various aspects of eider breeding biology.
