Paleoecological analysis of pollen, fungal polynomorphs, and charcoal show a series of vegetation changes around the pond. Liquidambar, in the wet period between 6600 and 6500 BP gave way to Cephalanthus understory to about 6300. In drier times, to 1900 BP, Castanea, Quercus, and Xanthium dominated. Pinus increased from 1900 to 165 BP. Historic changes included some drainage and an increase in pine and Liquidambar. In conclusion the author states that the interaction of climatic and topographic processes made the pond a refugium for Central Plains species during the Holocene.
