Core samples for paleomagnetic measurements were taken from various Holocene lava flows including CRMO (Craters of the Moon National Monument). Results discussed and flows dated. Geographic location: Regional including CRMO. A fairly good record of the variation in direction of the geomagnetic field in northwestern United States from 1,500 BP to 3,000 BP and from 5,800 BP to 6,900 BP has been obtained by measurements of dated volcanic rocks. A less complete record has been obtained for the variation in intensity of the field. Preliminarily ages are given for 6 previously unrated lava flows on the Snake River Plain, Idaho by comparing their directions of magnetization with the known record. Possible are assignments are suggested fir another 5 flows. A major pulse of volcanism occurred on the Snake River Plain between 2,000 BP and about 2,600 BP. Several tens of cubic kilometers of basalt erupted along the Great Rift in this period.
