The purpose of this research was to examine possible impacts which may be occurring to the upper Pamet River ecosystem due to natural or cultural processes. It began in the fall of 1984; sampling occurred once during each of the fall, winter, and spring seasons, and eleven times during the 1985 summer season. Sampling locations included three river stations and twelve shoreside wells. The study consisted of (a) measurements of physical and chemical parameters in the river; (b) analysis of river and well water samples for concentrations of chemical compounds and elements; (c) determination of species composition and abundance of various biological populations in the river; and (4) measurements of hydrographic parameters to establish flow characteristics of the river. Physical and chemical parameters studied included pH, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, temperature, acidity, alkalinity, carbon dioxide, chloride, iron, silicon, aluminum, sulfate, and nutrients (ammonia, nitrate and nitrite, phosphorus). Two categories of biological organisms studied were: (1) phytoplankton, which respond rapidly to environmental conditions, and (2) bottom-dwelling animals, which are indicative of longer-term changes. Also, rooted and attached vegetation was examined. Results of this research are summarized on pp. 98-101 of the report. In general, the river is considered to be in good condition (at least as shown by phytoplankton populations), although certain data indicate potential problem areas.
