(Adapted from authors' introduction.) This progress report covers the second year of a study on vegetation succession. Its objectives were to identify the roles of mycorrhizae in patch formation on primary successional sites on recently deglaciated areas. The study consists of a series of observations in the field, as well as field and indoor experiments designed to test hypotheses concerning mycorrhizal formation by early colonizing plant species, potential transfer of mycorrhizal fungi to later arriving plants, and differences in mycorrhizal infection levels and types in different successional stages. A brief account is given of 12 hypotheses tested, and third-year work plans are outlined.
