This study of genetic differentiation in salamanders examines four forms of Desmognathus ochrophaeus found in western North Carolina mountains. Study results show the effects of geographic population distances on genetic variation; in at least one case, elevation also is found to affect allozyme frequencies. The local species richness (12 named species in the Appalachian Mountains) of this group of salamanders provides a basis for understanding interrelationships among processes of diversification and ecological variables. The paper considers variation at three levels: within a single species, among individual species, and among different species of the desmognathine salamanders. With diagrams of allozyme variation and other illustrations relating genetic characteristics to geographic distribution.
