(Adapted from authors' abstract.) This report details a study of sea bird colonies that took place from 16 May to 4 September 1978 on Chisik and Duck islands in lower Cook Inlet. Productivity statistics on black-legged kittiwakes and horned puffins through their incubation and nesting stages were compiled. Incidental observations were also made for common murres and glaucous-winged gulls. The gulls were identified as an important predator of kittiwakes and murres. The kittiwakes (a surface feeder) failed in the reproductive effort, while the puffins (a diver) achieved success. The authors believe kittiwakes failed because their major prey, Pacific sand lance, did not enter surface waters in substantial numbers; but puffins found them in deeper waters. An appendix contains an annotated species list for all birds observed during the study.
