This 1989 Master's thesis was conducted at the request of the U.S. National Park Service. Ten lakes within Lake Clark National Park and Preserve were sampled in 1985, 1986, and 1987 to obtain baseline physical, chemical, and biological data of their surface waters. The work also examined the relationship between lake chemistry and geochemistry of the bedrock of selected watersheds in the Park, and attempted to determine what nutrients limit primary productivity in the waters of Lake Clark. Lakes within the Park were found to be dimictic with chemistry dominated by calcium and magnesium cations and bicarbonate and sulfate anions. The lakes varied widely in concentration of dissolved ions, which was attributed to their bedrock character. Pelagial productivity of Lake Clark was limited by nitrogen more than by phosphorus.
