This study was conducted to determine if an un-restricted spill-over of saline water from the C-111 Canal in south Dade County onto the sawgrass habitat of eastern Everglades National Park would cause irreversible damage to the flora and fauna found there. Results indicate that freshwater soils, plants and animals make up about 50% of the total land area within the study area. The authors conclude that should a spill-over occur, there would be a southwestward spread of water, effecting periphyton and higher plants, resulting in the disappearance of freshwater fishes and invertebrates.
